Alberta's One-to-One Wireless Learning Community of Practice

Principal Community

Overview

Leadership matters! And in changing times, leadership matters even more.

During times of deep fundamental change, leaders are called upon to provide instructionally-focused and change-oriented leadership.

studentsThe research literature tells us that successful schools are organized around learning. In Alberta, the Principal Quality Practice Standard includes Instructional Leadership as its fourth dimension. Strong instructional leaders:

  • "demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy."(1) This means instructional leaders are "well-informed about curriculum and instruction, and especially knowledgeable about teaching methods that emphasize having students solve problems and construct knowledge."(2)
  • "recognize the potential of new and emerging technologies and their use in supporting learning and teaching."(1)

Through this Principal Community we will share knowledge and examine the ways in which strong, instructional leadership creates conditions which build and sustain performance of both staff and students.
